The MLB trade deadline is July 31.
Major deals are typically made at the MLB trade deadline, with numerous big-name players changing teams.
Some teams will be buyers while some will be sellers.
Teams that are sellers have no hope of making the playoffs, while buyers feel they are just one or two players away from challenging for a World Series.
Below are the teams that will be buyers and sellers at the MLB trade deadline.
MLB Trade Deadline: Buyers
Teams that are in position for a deep playoff run will be buyers at the MLB trade deadline.
- Detroit Tigers
- New York Yankees
- Houston Astros
- Philadelphia Phillies
- New York Mets
- Chicago Cubs
- Los Angeles Dodgers
The Detroit Tigers could use a right-handed bat. They have the best record in the American League but could still use a middle-of-the-order right-handed bat. Another position is a possible starting pitcher. Jackson Jobe will miss the remainder of the season, and adding a solid rotation piece would further boost the Tigers.
The New York Yankees could use some bullpen help and a second baseman. They have a stacked lineup, but the second base position is a weakness. Luke Weaver will be out for a while, and they could use another arm out of the bullpen.
The Houston Astros need Yordan Alvarez back, but they could also use a second baseman. With Jose Altuve in the outfield, second base is a weakness for Houston. Another arm in the bullpen would also be beneficial for the Astros.
The Philadelphia Phillies need bullpen help. Their bullpen ranks in the bottom 10 in ERA. Peter Fairbanks from the Rays would be a perfect fit for the Phillies.
The New York Mets are in a good spot, but could use another bat.
Chicago needs a starter or two at the trade deadline. Losing Justin Steele for the season leaves the Cubs’ starting rotation thin.
The Dodgers need starting pitchers at the trade deadline. They have suffered numerous injuries to their rotation and need to bulk up their starting rotation.
MLB Trade Deadline: Sellers
Teams that have no hope of making the playoffs will be sellers.
- Colorado Rockies
- Chicago White Sox
- Miami Marlins
- Washington Nationals
- Athletics
- Pittsburgh Pirates
All these teams have no hope of making the playoffs. Buyers will come to these teams for either starting pitchers, bullpen help, or adding a bat or two from any of these teams.
Luis Robert will be an interesting name at the trade deadline. He has been awful this season, and it will be interesting to see what the White Sox would want for him.
Sandy Alcantara is a name to watch for the Marlins. The Dodgers and Cubs could use a player like Alcantara.
The Pirates will not trade Paul Skenes, but could move a bunch of other players. Andrew Heaney is an interesting name to watch with some buyers needing a starting pitcher.
