Christian Benford has emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and the Bills’ star will be ing on knowledge to his local community next weekend.
Benford is holding a free football camp for kids aged 9-14 at his alma mater, Randallstown High, in Randallstown, Maryland, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.
Benford recently sat down with SportsCasting to talk about his camp, his children’s book, the Buffalo cornerback room, Jaire Alexander and more.
Q: How rewarding is it for you to put on this football camp?
Christian Benford: “Man, it’s a blessing. It’s an honor to be in this position.”
Q: Will you reconnect with people from the neighborhood during the event?
Christian Benford: “Yeah, I’ve got a lot of coaches I grew up with that I haven’t seen in a long time. It’s going to be a lot of reconnecting with old coaches, coaches I played for in Pop Warner, middle school, high school.”
Q: Did you go to any camps when you were a kid?
Christian Benford: “I actually only went to one camp when I was a kid, a Ravens camp. That was it. Other than that, I just went to camps in high school.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about these camps?
Christian Benford: “Just the smiles and the impact of giving them knowledge of the game, the position. I want them to enjoy themselves, and keep reminding them that football is fun. It’s just a sport, just a game.”
Q: You recently released a children’s book called ‘Stylish Safari’. How did that come together?
Christian Benford: “It came together because I love talking to the kids, impacting them, teaching them things that maybe people in their corner don’t have the knowledge yet. We all don’t have everything, we all don’t know everything. Sometimes you need someone else to help teach things, and while I was writing it I had the creative mindset to do that, and it turned into a book. It goes to schools, and it can make an impact on adults as well. As adults we still have a lot of learning to do.”
Q: Did you always feel a pull to give back to the youngsters that look up to you?
Christian Benford: “I don’t want them to look up to me. I want them to be better than me, to always elevate, and to be themselves. Don’t try to be like me. Be yourself.”
Q: I wanted to ask you a few football questions. You were recently ranked No. 8 among cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus. Do you appreciate that recognition, how people are noticing you’ve made this jump to one of the league’s top corners?
Christian Benford: “I really don’t pay that stuff too much attention. I’m just trying to work on my craft, get better day-by-day. I want to be the best corner, the best Christian Benford. So it’s not something I pay attention to.”

Q: Being a former sixth-round pick, did you always believe in your ability? There are plenty of sixth, seventh-round picks that don’t even make the league, and here you are making a name for yourself.
Christian Benford: “My first thoughts were just to play and impact the team the best way possible, do what I could do on the field to help win the Super Bowl. Those were my initial thoughts, and I just had to trust God and whatever he had planned for me.”
Q: It’s kind of funny how fast it goes, where you are more of a veteran now, and a guy like Max Hairston is the rookie coming in. How is he coming along? Do you give him advice?
Christian Benford: “I tell him something every day. We always talk before practice, after practice, during practice. We chop it up and I try to along my knowledge and information about the game.”
Q: Does it feel different, like you’ve made the move from a young guy to a veteran at this point?
Christian Benford: “I always saw myself as a vet. I don’t really do titles, but I always saw myself as a vet. You’ve got to carry yourself like that to be there, so that’s how I carried myself.”
Q: Having Tre’Davious White there again, is it cool that he’s back in the fold?
Christian Benford: “Yeah. He brings a lot of energy, a lot of laughter. It’s awesome.”
Q: Can you tell he’s motivated?
Christian Benford: “Oh, he’s definitely motivated. He’s still running like he’s young.”
Q: Do you know Jaire Alexander at all?
Christian Benford: “Not personally but of course I’ve heard about him.”
Q: There’s chatter that, like a lot of teams, Buffalo could be interested. Is he a guy that could help the room if he signs?
Christian Benford: “Yeah, that would be cool. (Bring in) as much as we need to win the Super Bowl. I think we already have some key components in the DB room, but if he comes through – I don’t know him too much, but his game speaks for itself.”
Q: Does Buffalo’s standing help with vets like that who might be interested in g with a contender?
Christian Benford: “Yeah, definitely. We’ve gone on a little run and we’ve got to get our first (title). That’s the mission.”
