Through months of on-track frustration, crew chief changes, and a prolonged winless skid, NASCAR Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen finally enjoyed an outing during which everything fell into place.
Entering last Saturday’s event at Michigan International Speedway, Friesen found himself 49 points below the provisional playoff spot. He needed a win to qualify for the playoffs.
Snapping a 79-race winless skid, Friesen captured the event at the two-mile D-shaped oval after ing Grant Enfinger following the final overtime restart. The slump-breaking win was nearly as big of news as Dodge announcing at MIS a return to the Truck Series next season.
Friesen spoke of his post-race relief.
“It just weighs on you, you know,” Friesen said, as reported by Sporting News. “It’s weighed on me. Racing is all I do and it’s all I love and it’s what we do. So, when you struggle and things happen time and again, it’s hard to get back on the horse a lot of days.
“We have 14 great guys in our shop that give their heart and soul to this race team and we keep bringing them back wrecked trucks and finished they don’t deserve. It wears on me a lot and it was tough after having so many great trucks to start the season and not getting them the finishes the deserve.”
With the Truck Series idle this week, Corey Heim will continue his title quest at Pocono Raceway on June 20. Heim (-110) remains the overwhelming favorite to capture the circuit title, according to BetOnline Sportsbook. Chandler Smith (+450) was tabbed with the second-best odds and Layne Riggs (+500) also sat on the sports-betting podium.
