18-year-old Joao Fonseca has taken the tennis world by storm in the past 12 months. He has the charisma and game to become one of tennis’s future stars with the question not being if he will succeed, but rather when.
The Brazilian opens his grass court campaign by accepting a wildcard to the Halle Open beginning June 16. Fonseca is more universally known for his clay court play, but he has already experienced success on hard and grass courts in his young career.
Joao Fonseca’s Whirlwind Year
Fonseca played Halle last year, also as a wildcard, ranked as the 217th ranked player in the world. One year later, he has jumped 15o spots into 57th. He won the 2024 ATP NextGen finals and his first ATP title in Buenos Aires in February.

What To Expect From Joao Fonseca At Wimbledon
Fonseca has earned big wins at this year’s Grand Slams. He defeated Andrey Rublev in the first round at the Australian Open. At the French Open, he knocked out Hubert Hurkacz and became only the sixth 18 year old to make it to the third round. ing elite company including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Borna Coric, and Carlos Alcaraz.
Joao Fonseca will enter the Wimbledon main draw for the first time in his career after not making it out of the qualifying rounds last year. However, he still managed to earn an impressive 2024 London grass court win over Alexei Popyrin at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic exhibition.
Fonseca has proven that he performs well in high-profile matches which makes us wonder who he will take out of Wimbledon. He has not made it to the second week of a Grand Slam yet so Brazilian and Wimbledon fans are hoping to see him make the deepest run of his career at a Grand Slam at the All England Club.
