Looking to bounce back after two successive defeats in the Champions League, reigning champions Real Madrid headed to Bergamo to take on in-form Serie A side and reigning Europa League winners Atalanta on Tuesday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side got off to an almost perfect start, taking the lead after a mere 10 minutes through marquee summer g Kylian Mbappe, who has come under fire lately due to his underwhelming start in the Spanish capital.

The Frenchman latched onto Brahim Diaz’s ball and set himself up beautifully before slotting past Marco Carnesecchi with a vicious finish to take his career Champions League goal tally to an impressive 50 goals.

Just 26 minutes later though, Mbappe was forced off with what looked to be an ankle injury.

On the stroke of half-time, the hosts’ pressure was rewarded, as they restored the parity through a Charles De Ketelaere penalty after Aurelien Tchouameni brought down former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac in the box.

11 minutes into the second period, Vinicius Junior put Real back in front, with Jude Bellingham getting in on the act three minutes later to make it 3-1 at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.

Despite the scoreline suggesting otherwise, La Dea had given a good of themselves up to this point, and this continued with Ademola Lookman reducing the deficit to one goal with a fine near-post finish after 65 minutes.

Los Blancos managed to hold on for the final 25 minutes or so to claim a crucial victory, propelling them up to 18th place in the table, in the playoff positions, whilst Atalanta drop down to ninth, also in the playoff positions.

Both Atalanta and Real Madrid return to domestic action in their respective leagues on Saturday, with the Serie A outfit entertaining Cagliari in Sardinia, while the La Liga champions head to Rayo Vallecano.

The pair return to Champions League action for their final two league phase fixtures in January. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side face Sturm Graz and Barcelona in their two matches, as Los Blancos take on RB Salzburg and Brest.
