With the 2025 US Open taking centre-stage at Oakmont Country Club in what is the third major championship of the year, all eyes are on the world’s best players.

Can world number one career Grand Slam at The Masters in April?

These are just a few of the narratives heading into another major week. Another narrative that golf fans are talking about is whether reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau can go back-to-back and win his third overall and second consecutive US Open.

After winning his second major 12 months ago at the 124th US Open at Pinehurst no.2, DeChambeau is aiming to successfully defend his US Open title this year at Oakmont.

Given the quality on show nowadays in world golf, this would be quite the achievement. That being said, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility with several people fancying the unique American heading into the 2025 US Open.

If Bryson was to win at Oakmont, he would become just the eighth golfer in history to secure back-to-back US Open victories.

Over the years there have been seven different players who achieved back-to-back US Open winners status. The last back-to-back US Open winner was of course Brooks Koepka, achieving the feat in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Now, Bryson DeChambeau aims to add his name to that list as we embark on the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

As previously outlined, there have been seven previous back-to-back US Open winners over the years.

Since it’s inception in 1895, only seven men have won the famous US Open trophy in consecutive years. Of these seven players, six are American with the other being Scotsman Willie Anderson.

The first player to achieve the feat was in fact Anderson, who won back-to-back US Open titles in 1903, 1904 and 1905. To this day, Anderson remains the only player to win three consecutive US Open titles.

Next was John McDermott, who went back-to-back at the US Open in 1911 and 1912. Bobby Jones was next, who triumphed at the US Open in both 1929 and 1930.

Ralph Guldahl (1937, 1938) and Ben Hogan (1950, 1951) were the next two players to secure back-to-back US Open wins.

Then came American Curtis Strange, who won b2b US Opens in 1988 and then again the following year in 1989. The last player to win the US Open back-to-back was Brooks Koepka in 2017 and 2018.

It might come as a surprise that the two best golfers in history, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, never won back-to-back US Opens.

Woods, who is set to miss the 125th US Open through injury, would have gone b2b if he had have won it in 2007, where he finished second, before winning it 12 months later in 2008.
