Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham Hotspur side headed to Istanbul to take on Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday, looking to maintain their perfect record in the competition whilst also looking to build on an impressive two successive victories over Manchester City and Aston Villa.

A much-changed Spurs side saw young Will Lankshear lead the line, as the likes of Yves Bissouma, Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, Ben Davies, Archie Gray and Fraser Forster made their returns to the lineup.

It got off to the worst possible start for the visitors though, as Yunus Akgun thundered home a volley from the edge of the area to put the Turkish champions in front at RAMS Park after just six minutes.

Just 12 minutes later, Tottenham responded, with 19-year-old Lankshear netting his first goal for the club. Some nice interplay by Postecoglou’s side ended with Brennan Johnson finding the youngster in the middle with an inch-perfect cross, and he made no mistake in turning home into an empty net.

Unfortunately for the Premier League outfit, Galatasaray restored their lead through Victor Osimhen in the 31st minute, before the Nigerian doubled his tally on the night to put the hosts 3-1 ahead in the 39th minute.

Things got from bad to worse for Spurs on the hour mark, as young Lankshear was shown his marching orders for a second yellow card, having received the first just seven minutes prior.

Dominic Solanke gave the travelling ers a glimmer of hope on the 69-minute mark, flicking home from Pedro Porro’s cross, but it was too little too late as Tottenham fell to their first league phase defeat of the campaign.

Up next for Spurs is a return to English top-flight action on Sunday when they host newly promoted Ipswich Town, with another clash against Man City following that. They return to continental action at the end of the month against Roma.

As for Galatasaray, they’ll be looking to maintain their lead at the top of the Turkish Super Lig against Samsunspor and Bodrum in their next two fixtures before heading to the Netherlands to take on AZ Alkmaar on MD5 of the Europa League.
