Pandemonium ensued in Paris as the final whistle blew at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, May 7. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had beaten Premier League heavyweights Arsenal 2-1 on the night (3-1 on aggregate) to secure a place in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League final.

PSG have not yet won the UEFA Champions League or its predecessor, the European Cup (1955-1991). Despite spending millions and millions on some of the most sought-after players in the business, including Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Old Big Ears have eluded the French juggernauts.

They have, however, won a couple of European trophies — the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995-96 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001.

The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup pitted the European league winners against one another and ran for 39 seasons (until 1997-98).

In the 1995-96 semi-finals, PSG beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 over two legs, setting up a final with Austrian side Rapid Wien. In the final, Bruno Ngotty scored in the 28th minute, sealing a 1-0 win for PSG.

The UEFA Intertoto Cup was a small competition for clubs that did not qualify for the Champions League or the UEFA Cup (now Europa League). Initially, there was only one winner. Later, UEFA decided on a multiple-winner format.

In 2001, PSG won the competition alongside Aston Villa and Troyes. All three teams directly qualified for the UEFA Cup. Les Parisiens beat Brescia on away goals (1-1) to secure their promotion.

The 13-time French champions have only played one Champions League / European Cup final throughout history. Their maiden Champions League final appearance came in the 2019-20 season, against the mighty Bayern Munich.

PSG put on a mighty show, with Neymar, in particular, tormenting the Bavarians with his pace, movement, and creativity. PSG’s efforts, however, came to nought as they failed to find a way past the formidable Manuel Neuer.

In the 59th minute, former PSG man Kingsley Coman struck for Bayern, burying Joshua Kimmich’s layoff into the back of the net. The Germans then defended with all their might to seal a 1-0 win at the Estadio da Luz.

PSG carried a slender advantage into the second leg at the Parc des Princes, courtesy of Ousmane Dembele’s fourth-minute strike in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman was not fit enough to start the backyard battle against the Gunners. But his teammates held the fort just fine.

In the 27th minute, Fabian Ruiz hit the back of the Arsenal net with a sensational left-footed strike. PSG defended well to go into the half-time with a two-goal aggregate lead.

Just past the hour mark, Bukayo Saka dispatched a spectacular curling effort, which looked destined to nestle into the Parisian net. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, however, refused to surrender his clean sheet, making an unbelievable diving save to keep PSG ahead on the night. In the 69th minute, it was David Raya’s turn to draw applause, as he denied Vitinha from the penalty spot.

Luis Enrique brought Dembele on in the 70th minute. Only a couple of minutes later, he assisted Achraf Hakimi for PSG’s second goal of the night. Saka got one back for Arsenal in the 76th minute. Leandro Trossard’s deflected cross fell to him inside the box, but he could not apply the finish. Luckily for him, Donnarumma had already committed, which allowed him to convert on his second attempt.

Arsenal created a couple more chances until the final whistle, but their finishing left a lot to be desired.
