Opetaia’s record reached a perfect 21-0 before he challenged for world honours for the very first time. Going into the first Mairis Briedis fight, Opetaia was the underdog. Briedis’ only defeat was to the great Oleksandr Usyk, so he was fully expected to do a job on Opetaia.

The bookies and the majority of fans couldn’t have been more wrong, as Opetaia put in a boxing clinic to unanimously outpoint the champion. Opetaia then signed with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, before making the first defence of his title against Britain’s Jordan Thompson.

Opetaia made short work of Thompson, emphatically knocking him out in Round 4 to retain his IBF World Cruiserweight Title. Then came his fight with Ellis Zorro. Despite being stripped by the IBF sanctioning body, Jai Opetaia defended his Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Title in emphatic fashion.

Opetaia absolutely annihilated Zorro in Round 1 of their fight on the Anthony Joshua undercard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, further cementing himself as the single best cruiserweight fighter on the planet.

Up next was Opetaia’s rematch with Briedis, in which Opetaia won convincingly to regain his IBF World Cruiserweight Title as well as retaining the Ring Magazine belt. This was on the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk undercard in May 2024, with the Australian somewhat stealing the show with his epic encounter.

Then came his fight against Britain’s Jack Massey, once again in Saudi Arabia on the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol undercard. Opetaia made short work of Massey, with the Englishman’s corner throwing the towel in after Opetaia was winning every round with pure destruction.

Opetaia’s last two performances, both of which have taken place in his home country of Australia on the Gold Coast, have arguably been the most destructive and emphatic of his entire career.

The 30-year-old took on New Zealander David Nyika in February, becoming the first man to beat him. Not only that, but the knockout was chilling, rendering Nyika unconscious withing four rounds.
