What Is The Lowest League Position A Team Has Won A Major European Trophy From? As Spurs and United Face-Off In Europa League Final 4a6o3b

Manchester United and Tottenham have both had league seasons they will want to erase – but the good news for their fans is they both have the chance to redeem themselves by lifting Wednesday’s Europa League trophy. However, with their poor efforts on the domestic front hitting the headlines – and the prospect still of glory in Europe – we look at previous European winners that have tasted glory from low league positions.
West Ham Were 14th In The League When Then Won The Europa Conference League in 2023 5o3o36
The Manchester United vs Tottenham stats for the Europa League suggest it’s a hard game to call – both teams are languishing in the Premier League and really they are lucky one of the three promoted sides (Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester) have struggled this campaign or they’d had further egg on their face.
United are down in 16th and Spurs 17th as they prepare to face-off in the 2025 Europa League Final on Wednesday night in Spain.
But whichever team does manage to salvage their season (not that they will probably care) – they will also have the unwanted record of being the team to win a European trophy from the lowest league position.
On a plus, West Ham fans will be pleased – as the London side currently hold his accolade when they won the Europa Conference League in 2022-23.
At the time the Hammers were only 14th in the league, which sured Inter’s 1994 UEFA Cup win when they were 13th in Serie A.
You can see the full list of the top (or bottom) five sides that had a hard time in the league, but still managed to reward their fans with a European football title.
Which also include another English side – Arsenal, who landed the 1970 Inter-Cities Fair Cup when only 12th in the old English top-flight.
What Are The Current League Positions For Tottenham and Manchester United? 5x5a40
With just one Premier League game remaining for both Tottenham and Manchester United – it’s hard to believe the pair are sitting just outside the relegation places.
The good news for them, however, is the three teams below them are already relegated – but if one of the trio of Southampton, Ipswich or Leicester had performed better this term – then we’d be staring at English top-flight heavyweights Spurs or United facing the drop.
As you can see from the table below, Manchester United will head into Wednesday’s Europa League final in 16th and Tottenham in 17th – with just a point separating the struggling sides.
They can both improve slightly on this in their final games, which are both on Sunday 25th May, as United host Aston Villa and Spurs entertain Brighton.
The good news for each team though is with their remaining league clash at home – one of them will be able to showcase the Europa League Trophy there this weekend.
You can see how many European Cups Spurs and Man Utd have won here.
While this will be only the second time United and Tottenham have met in Europe before. The only previous clash came in a 1963-64 Cup Winners’ Cup last 16, which the Red Devils won 4-3 over two-legs, with United legend Matt Busby at the helm.
