There was little to separate the two sides in the first half with neither team producing many moments of quality.

As half time approached, it looked as if it would be goalless at the break. But in the first minute of added-on time, Fulham struck.

Calvin Bassey made the breakthrough with his head after some poor defending from the hosts at a corner. United’s defender managed to allow Rodrigo Muniz to get his head to the ball which he was able to flick on to Bassey at the back-post to flick in.

United struggled to test Bernd Leno in Fulham’s net for the start of the second half but the visitors struggled to capitalise.

Fulham were made to rue their missed chances when Bruno Fernandes popped up with an exquisite finish to draw United level in the 71st minute.

United and Fulham continued to probe before eight minutes was added on. Andre Onana was forced to pull off a superb save to deny Emile Smith Rowe in stoppage time, forcing extra-time at Old Trafford.

Chido Obi-Martin, 17, almost put United in front at the death of first half extra-time but Leno’s instinctive save kept Fulham level at the break.

After 120 minutes and the score at 1-1, the FA Cup tie went to penalties. After six successfully-converted spot-kicks, Victor Lindelof saw his penalty saved by Leno, tipping the advantage to Fulham.

Antonee Robinson made it four perfect penalties for the host, putting the responsibility on Joshua Zirkzee. But with one kick of the football, Leno pulled off another spot-kick save to dump United out of the FA Cup, losing 3-4 in the shoot-out.

Fulham now progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals and will face Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.
