Bayern Munich and Dinamo Zagreb came close to scoring the most Champions League goals ever in a single game on Tuesday night.

The two sides scored a whopping 11 goals between them as Bayern romped to a 9-2 victory over their Croatian opponents.

Four of those goals came from England captain Harry Kane, who became the top-scoring Englishman in Champions League history.

The striker netted his 50th, goal for Bayern before adding a further three to overtake Wayne Rooney’s tally for goals in the competition.

Former Manchester United star Rooney scored 30 Champions League goals, but is now behind Kane who is up to 33 and counting.

Bayern’s dominant victory has put them top of the Champions League during the first round of its new league format.

With a goal difference of +7 after one game, it seems highly unlikely they will be knocked off the top spot by the end of round one.

But while Bayern may be top of that table, they will have to settle for second place when it comes to the highest-scoring Champions League match of all time.

However, they have broken the record for the most Champions League goals by one team in a match.

When it comes to the highest-scoring Champions League games in history, there are plenty to choose from.

Six different games have finished with nine goals scored. Most recently of these was Paris Saint-Germain’s 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa in 2022.

Another standout was Tottenham were on the end of a 7-2 thrashing against Bayern in 2019.

The Bavarian giants feature no less than three times in the top ten highest-scoring Champions League games ever, and have always been on the right side of the result.

As well as this week’s demolition of Dinamo Zagreb, Bayern also battered Barcelona 8-2 in 2020.

That was the only time a UCL game has finished with 10 goals scored. There has been one other occasion with 11 goals, though.

In 2003, AS Monaco beat Deportivo La Coruna 8-3 in another thumping result. But neither that nor Bayern’s most recent triumph can claim top spot.

That honour goes to Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warszawa. The two sides played out a ridiculous, 12-goal scoring-fest that in 2016 that finished 8-4 to Dortmund.

No Champions League game has ever finished with as many goals scored.
