A fresh Nick Kyrgios injury setback has seriously hampered his chances of appearing at the 2025 Australian Open.
The first tennis major of the year gets underway on Sunday and it may well do so without the maverick star. Kyrgios appeared to be over his two-year injury hell but the 29-year-old has endured further issues.
Friend Novak Djokovic was due to face Kyrgios in an exhibition match this week. However, the Aussie has pulled out of the charity event owing to his physical constraints.
Now, fans will be sweating on Kyrgios’ attendance at Melbourne Park. A jubilant home crowd got to see glimpses of Kyrgios in Brisbane last week. He appeared to play without any trouble.
However, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist has apparently suffered an abdominal injury and endured a grade 1 strain on his wrist.

Nick Kyrgios Injury Casts Doubts Over 2025 Australian Open Participation 58381l
After the fresh injury setback, Nick Kyrgios updated his followers on Instagram. The Australian star posted a story explaining what had happened
“Unfortunately won’t be able to play my good friend Novak this Thursday on the 9th as I’ve had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade 1 strain. Will be resting and doing everything I can to be ok by Australian Open.”
In Brisbane last time out, Kyrgios delighted the crowd with his comeback doubles victory alongside 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Barely 48 hours later, Kygrios confessed that during his singles defeat to ’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard he’d need a minor miracle to return to Grand Slam tennis.
“I think I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a grand slam, for sure,” he explained.
“For my wrist, it’s all new ground now. It’s very sore… we were expecting that. Today is another building block in the journey.”
It remains to be seen if Kyrgios will be able to compete next week. One advantage that could work in his favour is that his potential first round match could be played on Tuesday (January 14). The draw will be made on Thursday at 2.30pm Melbourne time.
