The ongoing Crystal Palace Europa League saga has taken a fresh twist this week with a fellow Premier League side wading into the argument by writing to UEFA to BACK the Eagles being thrown out of the competition.

Nottingham Forest Owner Evangelos Marinakis Has Written To UEFA, Expressing His ‘Concerns’ 4v5k3v

Crystal Palace won a place in the 2025/26 Europa League after winning the FA Cup. But there is now a doubt they’ll will be allowed to play in the lucrative competition.

This is due to UEFA multi-ownership rules saying clubs who have owners involved in two teams in the same competition – can’t both compete.

One of Palace’s main shareholders – US businessman John Textor – is also involved in French side Lyon, who also made the Europa League due to finishing 6th in the league.

Palace had their latest proposal rejected by UEFA, when Textor and fellow Eagles owner tried to put their shares into a ‘blind trust’‘.

With the issue still unresolved.

However, the story has taken a fresh turn this week as fellow Premier League side – Nottingham Forest – wading into the argument by writing to UEFA themselves.

It’s been reported that Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has penned a letter to UEFA to express their ‘concerns’ over Palace playing in the Europa League.

Why Are Forest Getting Involved In The Crystal Palace Europa League Row? 1t6o41

Well, Forest (along with bitter rivals Brighton) would be the teams to benefit if Palace lose their Europa League place.

Forest, who are currently in the lesser Europa Conference League, would move up to the Europa League.

Then Brighton, thanks to their 8th place league finish, would move into Forest’s Conference slot.

Marinakis is saying they took added measures to ensure this wouldn’t happen to them.

He’s also involved in Olympiakos and put things in place when the Greek side might also end up in the same tournament as Forest.

But, as it turned out, Olympiakos made it into the Champions League – so it didn’t matter – after winning the Greek Super League for a 48th time.

Crystal Palace Europa League Decision Expected To End Up In Court 512s1e

There is clearly a lot at stake for Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Brighton. So experts are now also predicting the case could end up in the Court Of Arbitration For Sport (CAS).

A positive UEFA outcome for the Eagles would allow them to compete in the same competition as Lyon. Which is something Forest and Brighton would surely appeal over.

Palace also can’t move down to the Europa Conference League as in a further snag. One of their owners is also involved in Danish side Brondby, who are also in that competition.

Lyon were also disqualified by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Boby (CFCB) in competing in Europe during the 2025/26 season after their annual financial statement.

It was said they French side had debuts of over €500m and were provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 back in November unless they adhered to the tight financial measures.

However, the ban was lifted after Lyon submitted fresh financial statements that showed a ‘cleaner audit’.
