Burnley make the relatively short trip to Deepdale to take on fellow Championship outfit Preston in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday, where they’ll be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 24 straight matches across all competitions.

Scott Parker’s side, who currently occupy third place in the second tier, have been in fine form in the lead-up to this one and come into the tie off the back of a resounding 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last Friday.

Prior to that, they actually visited Deepdale in the league – a clash that ended in a goalless stalemate. That result forms part of their impressive clean sheet record, having now gone 12 consecutive games without conceding in the league.

In of their run to the fifth round of the cup, Burnley overcame Premier League strugglers Southampton 1-0 in the last round and defeated League One side Reading 3-1 in extra time in the third round.

Preston, FA Cup winners in 1888/89 and 1937/38, meanwhile, narrowly beat Charlton Athletic in the third round and required a penalty shootout to defeat League One promotion-chasers Wycombe in the fourth round.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side are without a win in each of their last three Championship matches, losing 2-1 to in-form Coventry at the weekend, following on from their draw against the Clarets and a stalemate against Millwall. It leaves the Lilywhites in 15th place in the table, nine points adrift of the play-offs, and 12 points clear of relegation.

North End are now without a win in each of their last five competitive clashes against Burnley since April 2016, with three of those ending in draws, while two have ended in defeat. They can put all of that behind them with a victory in this one though, which would book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 1965/66.

The hosts have a fairly lengthy injury list for their Lancashire rivals’ visit, as they are without all of Duane Holmes (leg), Jordan Storey (ankle), Jack Whatmough (calf) and Ben Whiteman (ankle).

Danish attacking midfielder Mads Frokjaer, who missed the defeat to Coventry on Saturday, remains doubtful after picking up a knock in the 1-1 draw against Millwall.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Parker confirmed that Bashir Humphreys would miss out on the clash: “Bash has picked up a quad strain and will be missing for a little bit. He picked it up in training and we’ll continue to monitor it.”

The Chelsea loanee s Jordan Beyer, Aaron Ramsey and Mike Tresor on the sidelines.

Preston vs Burnley Prediction 2x2l2c

The UK’s best football betting sites have Burnley as 6/5 favourites to advance to the quarter-finals by winning in regular time, while a draw is rated at 11/5 and a victory for Preston is priced at around 5/2.

As the Clarets have proven over the course of several months now, their defensive line is an incredibly tough cookie to crack, with their sole goal conceded in 2025 coming in the FA Cup third round win over Reading.

We at SportsCasting expect the Premier League promotion hopefuls to maintain their impressive run of clean sheets on Saturday and are backing them to prevail in a low-scoring affair at Deepdale.

Prediction: Preston 0-1 Burnley
