Poland’s greatest-ever striker, Robert Lewandowski, has announced he will not represent his country again as long as Michal Probierz is in charge. 

Barcelona star Lewandowski excused himself from Poland’s international matches in June, citing mental exhaustion.

Poland beat Moldova 2-0 in a friendly on Friday (June 6) and will face Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday (June 10).

Robert Lewandowski, who won his second LaLiga title with Barcelona in 2025, quit the national team after losing his captaincy. On Sunday, June 8, a statement from the Polish FA confirmed that Michal Probierz had appointed Piotr Zielinski as the new captain.

The statement read:

“By decision of the coach Michał Probierz, Piotr Zielinski has become the new captain of the Polish national team. The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision.”

Shortly after the press release went live, Lewandowski took to social media, announcing his decision. The 36-year-old centre-forward said he had lost trust in Probierz and would not play again under him.

“Taking into the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,” wrote Lewandowski.

“I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world.”

Lewandowski, who once said ‘yes’ to a move to Manchester United, has issued an ultimatum. Now, it is up to the Polish FA to pick between their greatest-ever player and manager.
