England manager Thomas Tuchel has said the new and revamped FIFA Club World Cup will hugely impact the Premier League next season. 

Tuchel, who managed Chelsea between January 2021 and September 2022, believes Liverpool and Arsenal will greatly benefit from it.

The reworked 32-team FIFA Club World Cup gets underway in the United States on June 14. Like summer international tournaments, UEFA Euro and FIFA World Cup, the Club World Cup will also run for one whole month. The final is at the MetLife Stadium on July 13.

In the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup edition, two teams are competing from the Premier League: Manchester City and Chelsea. Both the Cityzens and the Blues qualified for winning the UEFA Champions League, in 2022/23 and 2020/21, respectively.

Liverpool, who became one of the fastest title winners in Premier League history, have missed out, alongside runners-up Arsenal. As per FIFA’s rules, only two teams from the same country can play in the Club World Cup. Since Man City and Chelsea won the top-most competition in Europe — the Champions League — in the eligibility window, they qualified for the CWC.

After failing to qualify, Liverpool and Arsenal will not have the chance to win the mega Club World Cup prize money. Thomas Tuchel, however, believes this has been a blessing in disguise.

The England manager expects the month-long tournament to leave Man City and Chelsea players fatigued. The effect could carry over to the 2025/26 Premier League season, allowing fresher Liverpool and Arsenal players to thrive.

Tuchel said (via Yahoo): “I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there.

“I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there to play this tournament for the first time, so it is mixed feelings about it. I decided not to worry too much because why should I?

He concluded by adding:

“It is a given, and no one knows what will be the outcome of it or the effect. We will deal with the effect when the effect comes.

“We have a lot of teams in the Champions League next season and European football, and let’s see.”

Manchester City are in Group G of the Club World Cup alongside Juventus, Wydad AC, and Al Ain. They begin their campaign with a clash against Wydad AC on Wednesday, June 18.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are in Group D and will face Flamengo, Leon, and ES Tunis. They will play their tournament opener against Leon on June 16.

The Club World Cup will not only impact Premier League teams but could also limit Thomas Tuchel’s England options. If any of his players pick up a serious injury — the chances of which increase with fatigue — he could be without them in September. The Three Lions will face Andorra and Serbia in back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifiers on September 6 and 9.
