The previous two majors of the year, the Masters in April and the PGA Championship in May, both had to face perilous weather. There is a real risk that the third one will also suffer.
While the main tournament phase is expected to get off to a pleasant start, the practice window could be badly hit by thunderstorms. Additionally, the closing phase of the 125th U.S. Open could also see bouts of thunderstorms and rain.

Mud Ball Threat Looms Ahead of 125th U.S. Open 3z3i4g
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler won the Masters and the PGA Championship, respectively, in 2025. Playing conditions were far from ideal in both tournaments, which bumped up the unpredictability quotient.
The organisers are seemingly enjoying this toss-up, as the ‘preferred lies’ rule will once again be absent from the U.S. Open. Had it been in play, golfers would have been allowed to lift, clean, and position their ball within a specified range.
Across both tournaments, golfers had to deal with mud balls. Due to the accumulation of mud on the body of the golf ball, the aerodynamics are badly affected. As a result, the ball’s flight and trajectory become almost impossible to predict.

At the Augusta Masters, a dejected Jordan Spieth complained how mud balls affected his game.
“My iron play killed me the last two days, and to be brutally honest with you, it was primarily mud balls,” said Spieth (via Express).
“It’s just so frustrating because you can’t talk about them here. You’re not supposed to talk about them.”
The PGA Championship at Quail Hollow was also hampered by rain. However, the mud balls effect was not as prominent. At the U.S. Open, it could once again emerge as a major problem.
The 2024 U.S. Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, who is Wildcard, English golfer Tyler Weaver, meanwhile, could benefit from a dash of chaos.
