Aston Villa won a fifth straight Premier League outing with a 4-1 demolition of Newcastle United to bounce back from Champions League heartbreak.

Ollie Watkins returned to the starting line-up and scored after just 33 seconds, recording the quickest goal of the Premier League season so far.

Watkins became the first Aston Villa player to score at least 15 goals in three consecutive league campaigns and equalled Gabriel Agbonlahor’s tally of 74 for the club.

Since the start of 2022-23, only Mohamed Salah (104) and Erling Haaland (100) have tallied more goals and assists than Watkins (75).

Fabian Schar equalised for the visitors soon after but Villa put themselves back in front through Ian Maatsen 20 minutes after the restart.

Dan Burn’s own goal gave the hosts a two-goal cushion before Amadou Onana’s wonderstrike put the cherry on top of a scintillating performance with 15 minutes to play.

The win closes the gap between the two sides to just two points in the standings as Villa sit in a menacing position to secure Champions League football next season.

Unai Emery’s side exited the competition at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in midweek but are now level on points with Nottingham Forest who currently occupy the fifth and final Champions League spot.

Newcastle are third and remain in pole position to finish in the places but with just two points separating themselves and Villa in sixth, the battle is likely to go down to the final day.

Villa are now 16 games unbeaten at home in the league, one adrift the record 17 set from March to December 2023.

The Villans have won ten out of their last 11 in all competitions and still have a chance to get their hands on some silverware in the FA Cup as next week’s Wembley semi-final against Crystal Palace draws closer.

Newcastle’s six-game winning streak came to an abrupt end but the schedule does get easier for the Magpies with Ipswich and Brighton to follow.
