Scott McTominay scored from the spot as the only goal in Scotland’s 1-0 Nations League play-off win over Greece.

Scotland are bidding to remain in League A and take a decisive lead back to Glasgow ahead of Sunday evening’s second leg at Hampden Park.

McTominay won the penalty with a menacing charge into the box shortly after the half-hour mark and duly obliged from 12 yards to give Steve Clarke’s side the lead.

Since 2023, Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes is the only European midfielder to score more international goals (12) than his former teammate McTominay (11).

Greece attempted 24 shots in the encounter, their highest total in a single match across the campaign but managed just one on target and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon enjoyed a quiet night.

Scotland have won their last three games in the Nations League following crucial wins over Croatia and Poland in November which allowed them the opportunity to fight to stay in the top division.

VAR came to the visitors’ rescue in the second half, denying a Greece penalty with five minutes to spare.

Once this Nations League play-off is out of the road, the Scots will start building momentum towards a key World Cup qualifying campaign in the autumn.

Scotland will face Belarus, Greece and Denmark/Portugal in Group C for a chance to play on the biggest stage in international football in America next year.

The Tartan Army’s last World Cup appearance came in 1998.
